Abstract

Slushing compositions for application to bright ferrous surfaces of machines to protect them against rust during storage and shipment comprise a mineral lubricating oil or a waxy solid petroleum product such as petrolatum, a solvent, e.g. white spirit, and a minor proportion of a partial ester of a monocarboxylic fatty or naphthenic acid and of a straight chain aliphatic polyhydric alcohol or partially dehydrated alcohol of this type. A fatty material such as animal or vegetable fats, waxes or fatty oils may also be present. The partial ester may be a mono-ester of glycol, or a mono- or di-ester of glycerol, of erythritol, of pentaerythritol, of arabitol or of a partially dehydrated hexitol and the acid radical of the ester may be oleate, erucate, naphthenate, laurate, stearate, palmitate, or a mixture of fatty acid radicals derived from a naturally occurring animal or vegetable oil or fat. The proportion of partial ester may be 0.5 to 10 per cent by weight of the non-volatile portion of the composition which may, for example, consist of about 80 per cent by weight of solvent, 10 per cent of wool grease, 8 per cent of mineral lubricating oil and 2 per cent of the partial ester. The partial esters may be prepared by reacting one mol. of the polyhydric alcohol or of the partially dehydrated polyhydric alcohol with one or two mols. of the monocarboxylic acid or monocarboxylic acid mixture either in the presence or absence of a catalyst. Catalysts such as sulphuric or phosphoric acids or sodium hydroxide may be used. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 150-300 DEG C. in a closed kettle fitted with a stirring gear, an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide being preferably passed through the mixture in order to assist in the removal of the water formed and to prevent discoloration of the esters. Methods for the preparation of partial esters of partially dehydrated polyhydric alcohols have been described in U.S.A. Specification 2,322,820.
