Abstract
604,718. Cartridge capping machines. VINCENT, M. Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32487. [Class 9 (i)] A machine for inserting percussion caps in ammunition cartridge cases has a slidable feed member 22, Fig. 3, which conveys one case at a time into axial alignment with a reciprocating ram 7, Fig. 1, which removes the case from the member 22 and carries it into engagement with capping means, the feed member having a spring-loaded flap 27 which holds each case in place but which is opened to release each case when the latter is caught by the ram and the feed member then retracted. As shown, the cases are fed down a shoot 15 and pass one at a time into the space between arms 23 of the feed member and the flap 27. The feed member is reciprocated by an arm 32 which is moved in one direction by a spring 41 and in the other direction by a cam 42 on a driven shaft 43. When the spring moves the feed member to align a case with the ram 7 the latter is moved by a crosshead 6 into the case to hold it, and the feed member is then withdrawn leaving the case on the ram. The ram is urged by a spring 13 against a nut 12 which screws into a sleeve 9 adjustably mounted in the crosshead. The percussion caps are fed from an agitated overhead hopper formed by two plates spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the lengths of the caps, and pass into a vertical channel 52 in a single column and thence to a radial groove in a cylindrical block 60. This block is screwed on to a sleeve 61 containing a capping punch 62 which is reciprocated by a pivoted lever 67 driven by a cam 68 on shaft 43. Under the action of the cam 68 the punch 62 pushes each cap along an axial bore 66 as the ram 7 carries a cartridge case towards this head and the cap is thus forced into position. When ram 7 is retracted the case is removed from it by a plate 77 and the cap drops down a shoot 80 on to a grill 81, the function of which is to allow any caps which have been jolted from their cases to pass down a shoot 85 to a receptacle.
