Abstract
604,716. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. (Murphy, H. P.). Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32437. [Class 53] In order to prevent the accumulation of an explosive mixture of gases above an accumulator enclosed in a container, the latter is provided with a cover having an opening which is covered with a layer of porous material which allows hydrogen to diffuse into the atmosphere more rapidly than other gases. Fig. 1 shows a three-cell accumulator in a steel container 10 having a steel cover 18 detachably connected to the container and making an airtight joint therewith by means of sealing material 17. In the roof 20 of the cover is a rectangular opening 21 which is completely covered by a sheet 22 of porous material supported by a grating consisting of bars 23, 24. The sheet 22 is clamped in position by a member 25, the side walls 28 of which support a supplementary cover 30 for protecting the sheet 22 from damage. The sheet 22 may consist of asbestos, glass wool or sintered glass powder or of a thin rubber membrane.
