Abstract
604,666. Glass manufacture. KODAK, Ltd. May 13, 1944, No. 9216. Convention date, April 17, 1943. [Class 56] [Also in Groups II and XX] A glass surface is prepared, before coating in vacuo with an optical interference layer (see Group XX) or with a reflecting layer (see Group II), by subjecting it to a glow discharge of more than 25 milliamps. at a pressure between .05 and .5 mm. mercury; after establishment of the glow discharge the pressure is raised within these limits and the discharge is maintained for more than 5 mins., or for more than ¢ min. if the product of the intensity (milliamps.) and time (mins.) is not less than 125; without breaking the vacuum, the coating is then applied. After the glass elements 10 have been cleaned by processes which may include inspection in an intense specular light beam from a viewpoint at an angle to the beam to detect residual scum, they may be subjected to the glow discharge in a bell-jar 23 as shown, a high potential (of the order of 25,000 v.) being established between electrodes 27 and. 28 by a transformer 29. A resistance heater may be incorporated in the bell-jar to preheat the elements 10 immediately before or after the glow discharge treatment, as described in Specifications 604,665, 604,741 and 604,742. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the passage of mechanical vibrations (e.g. of ultrasonic frequency) through the glass in the vacuum immediately before coating. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
