Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide the light attenuator of high reliability and easy manufacture by finishing one end face of an optical fiber to a mirror surface, forming a vapor deposition film of metals or the like, contacting this and the other end face in such a manner that there are no spacing deviation, angle deviation and axial deviation and fusion-connecting these. CONSTITUTION:The end face of an optical fiber 11 and the end of another optical fiber 12 are both finished to a mirror surface and a vapor deposition film 13 of metals or the like which attenuates the light waves propagating in the optical fiber is deposited on the fiber 11. These two fibers 11, 12 are so aligned as to have no deviations in the spacing, axis and angle between the end faces of the fibers. Fusion welding by arc discharging is then performed by applying high voltage to a pair of electrodes 14a, 14b. This method enables the stationary light attenuator of relatively easy manufacture and high reliability to be provided.
