Abstract
A preparation for liquifying mucus or reducing its viscosity by biochemical oxidation is obtained by mixing one or more derivatives of lactic acid capable of acting as hydrogen donators and which are substrates of lactic dehydrogenase, with one or more per-compounds which are capable of acting as the corresponding hydrogen acceptors. The preparations may be applied in the industrial treatment of dead animal or vegetable tissues containing mucus, e.g. in treating animal intestines in the manufacture of sausage skins. According to one example calcium-sodium lactate is mixed with sodium perforate and liquid paraffin. According to a further example calcium lactate is mixed with magnesium peroxide and glycerin. The mucolytic effect of the preparations is improved by the addition of a ferrous salt. They may also contain disinfecting, neutralizing or fermentation-checking agents with or without ethereal oils such as peppermint oil. The first Provisional Specification describes also admixtures of hydrogen peroxide with lactic acid and ferrous sulphate, and of sodium peroxide with magnesium lactate, ferrous chloride and paraffin. The second Provisional Specification refers also to the employment of oxybutyric acid and ascorbic acid as hydrogen donators.ALSO:A preparation for liquifying mucus or reducing its viscosity by biochemical oxidation is obtained by mixing one or more derivatives of lactic acid capable of acting as hydrogen donators and which are substrates of lactic dehydrogenase, with one or more percompounds which are capable of acting as the corresponding hydrogen acceptors. The preparations may be applied as a douche to diseased mucus membranes, as a mouth wash or gargle or in the form of tooth-cleaning pastes or powders. According to one example, calcium-sodium lactate is mixed with sodium perborate and liquid paraffin. According to a further example calcium lactate is mixed with magnesium peroxide and glycerin. The mucolytic effect of the preparations is improved by the addition of a ferrous salt. They may also contain the usual bases of dentifrices, and disinfecting, neutralising or fermentation-checking agents with or without ethereal oils such as peppermint oil. The first Provisional Specification describes also admixtures of hydrogen peroxide with lactic acid and ferrous sulphate, and of sodium peroxide with magnesium lactate, ferrous chloride and paraffin. The second Provisional Specification refers also to the employment of oxybutyric acid and ascorbic acid as hydrogen donators.
