Abstract

A method of making an optical element such as a prism from polymerizable material, e.g. styrene, cyclohexyl methacrylate or methyl methacrylate, comprises rigidly securing together mould parts 10, introducing the polymerizable material into the mould, advancing the polymerization through an initial hardening stage, releasing the mould parts from one another, and finally advancing the polymerization to substantial completion, the mould parts remaining attached to the material as the <PICT:0604274/IV(a)/1> latter shrinks. The mould parts may be secured together by an alloy 13 such as Wood's Metal or "Belmont Alloy," which may be removed as by fusion or by being mechanically scraped or pried therefrom. The initial polymerization may be carried out at 25-40 DEG C. for one to two days and the final polymerization at 80-90 DEG C. for one day. At the end of the second stage of hardening the plates 11 and 12 may be removed from the hardened product by immersing the mould and the formed prism into a hot water bath containing a surface active agent such as "Aerosol." In a modified method the removal of the alloy 13 is effected automatically by the higher temperature used in the second hardening stage.
