Abstract

Very strong threads of artificial silk are made by extruding viscose into a sulphuric acid-salt spinning bath containing a small proportion of formaldehyde or other aliphatic aldehyde and then stretching the threads so produced while they are passing through a second bath containing hot water. Alternatively, the aldehyde, instead of being present in the spinning bath, may be added to another bath containing water at the temperature of the spinning bath, and the threads may be passed through this bath before entering the hot water bath in which they are stretched. The formaldehyde strengthens the threads and enables them to be subjected to greater stretching tensions than are permissible without this addition. In an example, viscose containing 8 per cent of cellulose and 7 per cent of alkali is extruded into a bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, zinc sulphate, and 2 per cent of formaldehyde. After leaving the bath the freshly spun thread is led through a water bath heated to 90 DEG C. and containing a little acid owing to the spinning bath solution carried along by the thread. In this bath, the thread is stretched 120 per cent by means of rollers. A thread having a tensile strength of 3.5 grams per denier is obtained.
