Abstract

Modified mono-olefin hydrocarbon/carbon monoxide interpolymers are made by contacting the interpolymer, at a temperature below its decomposition temperature, with a minor proportion of a basic compound. Basic compounds specified are ethylamine, propylamine, isobutylamine, hexylamine, decylamine, octadecylamine, hexamethylenediamine, octamethylenediamine, decamethylenediamine, piperazine, 1,12-diaminooctadecane, pyridine, piperidine, quinoline, toluidine, diphenylamine, aniline, dimethylaniline, xylidenes, m- and p-phenylenediamine, a - and b -naphthylamines; cyclohexylamine, methyl cyclohexylamine; hydrazine hydrate; quaternary ammonium hydroxides; sodium, potassium and ammonium hydroxides and carbonates; sodium and potassium acetates and di- and tri-sodium phosphates. The basic compound may be added to the interpolymer by mixing on rolls; by dissolving in solvents, e.g. dioxane and dioxolane; by mixing aqueous dispersions; or by dipping the interpolymer in a solution of the basic compound. Fillers, pigments, dyes and plasticisers may be incorporated in the products which may be used for making films and moulded articles. In examples: (III) an ethylene/carbon monoxide interpolymer is milled with wood flour and methanol and wetted with a solution of m-phenylenediamine in ethyl alcohol; (V) a film cast from a chloroform solution of a propylene/ethylene/carbon monoxide interpolymer is soaked in an aqueous solution of ethylamine and heated at 100 DEG C.; (VII) a solution of piperazine in alcohol is added on warm rubber rolls to a propylene/ethylene/carbon monoxide interpolymer.
