603,316. Cleaning filters. KING, E. COURTNEY-. Oct. 18, 1945, No. 27348. [Class 46] A process for cleaning filter elements used in dry-cleaning systems comprises subjecting the elements to the action of boiling liquid solvent while they are immersed therein. As shown, the filter chamber f contains grids g surrounded by filter bags, the grids being spigoted on a header h which is connected through a valve 1 and pipe d to the dry cleaner. The return pipe e from the cleaner leads through a valve 8 to a pump p which returns the cleaning liquid through pipe q to the chamber f. The base of the filter has a removable door s provided with pipes k leading to a steam coil heater. The top of the chamber f is connected to a condenser u which discharges to a water separator m and a storage tank n. In the filter-cleaning operation, the valves are suitably set, the chamber f is filled with liquid up to a level determined by an outflow pipe r and steam is supplied to the coil k. As the solvent boils the dirt collects in the bottom of the chamber f. Preferably substantially the whole of the liquid is boiled off. Vapours are then drawn off by a fan x and the sludge door s is removed together with the steam coil. The residual dirty liquid and dirt are then withdrawn.
