Abstract
603,231. Positive clutches. COUSE, K. W. Feb. 20, 1945, No. 4283. Convention date, March 28, 1944. '[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle-type power take-off device of the kind interposed in the transmission system to drive either the vehicle or auxiliary apparatus, the driving member is normally clutched to one driven member under the action of a spring, or can be clutched to the other driven member by shifting mechanism carried within the outer cylindrical casing. The driving shaft 10 and driven shaft 28 have freely mounted thereon by bearings 3, 4 a cylindrical casing 5 provided with a number of grooves 7 for belts 8 which drive auxiliary machinery. The arrangement is such that the driving shaft 10 can be clutched to the casing 5 or to the driven shaft 28. Power is transmitted via the input shaft 10 and internally splined collar 16 to the correspondingly splined and slidable member 17, 18 to which is secured by locking screws 21 and retaining ring 22 an extension 20 terminating in one member 23 of a dog clutch. A spring 19 urges the slidable assembly outwardly. The dog clutch member 23 can be engaged either with a member 25, as shown, which is fast with the cylindrical casing 5 and so transmits power to the belts 8, or by axial displacement it engages clutch member 27 for power transmission to the output shaft 28. The mechanism for displacing the slidable clutch assembly 17, 18, 20, 23 comprises a pair of fingers 34, which engage a ring 31 fast on the member 18, pivoted at 35 to arms 36 formed integrally with the pinions 37. The latter are engaged by racks 42 which can be moved by push rods 46, 47 when their outer ends are engaged by the rings 50 or 51 upon longitudinal displacement of the operating bar 52. The fingers 34 project through guiding apertures 40 in the pinion support 39, and are urged by leaf springs 41 into contact with the member 18 ; the arrangement gives a toggle action whereby when the clutch is in the position shown, the fingers 34 are retained in position by the outward thrust of the spring 19.
