Abstract

603,132. Cooling systems for engines. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 10, 1945, No: 33332. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A cooling system for an engine 10, Fig. 1, with a radiator 11 consists of a fan 15 and coolant pump 14 both driven from a power shaft 16 through an electromagnetic clutch 20, Fig. 2, having an energisable rotor 24 and a magnetic material casing 22, slippage occurring between the members 22 and 24 when the fan has reached the maximum speed for efficient cooling. In the operating circuit, Fig. 2, a bulb 40 inserted in the cooling jacket operates the switch contacts 37, 38 by pressure generated in it when the engine reaches a certain temperature, expanding a bellows 39 and so starting the cooling fan and pump. In a modification, the bellows may operate the arm of an electric rheostat so increasing clutch current with increasing engine temperature. In a further modification, a three-pole switch is used, the first part of the travel of the bellows closing the clutch circuit with a series resistance and the second part of the travel short-circuiting the series resistance to give maximum current to the clutch. In a further modification, a cooling system which is usable with all the above circuits has its fan only driven through an electromagnetic clutch. A key switch 34, which may be the standard ignition switch, is included in all circuits.
