603,123. Powder metallurgy; making dies &c. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO. & SMITHS, Ltd., KELLY, A., and ASHTON, A. B. Nov. 15, 1945, No. 30657. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii). and 83 (iv)] Copying by milling.-In a method of making a sintered metal article having a shaped hole therein, a revolving cutter is fed into a compressed mass of the powder and the cutter and the mass are given relative feed motions by a copying mechanism to produce a hole of the required shape, after which the mass is sintered and if necessary, ground and polished. The method may be used for the production of drawing or extruding dies. A pellet 22 comprising a compressed mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt powders and having an axial hole 23 is mounted in a split ring or die 24 beneath a rotating cutting tool 19. The tool is fed into the hole 23 and either the tool or the cup 20 carrying the pellet is given a lateral motion through pantograph mechanism so as to produce an accurately shaped hole. The pellet is then sintered, ground and polished. Powder removed from the pellet by the tool 19 is collected in a cup 26 and may be used in making further pellets. The pantograph comprises four pivoted arms 1, 2, 3, 4, moving about a fixed pivot 9 and carrying the tool driven by a flexible cable 17 in the arm 2 and having at an extended end of the arm 4 a tracer in the form of a cross 12 marked on a glass plate 11 movable over a pattern or drawing 14 by means of a handle 13.
