Abstract

6 0 2,8 7 4. Capsule-forming apparatus. GUNNELL, R. W. Feb. 15, 1945, No. 3826. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1944. [Class 81(i)] In a method for the formation of capsules, superposed layers of capsule-coating liquid and a cooling liquid of different gravities and mutually immiscible, are maintained within a chamber, a fluid capsule substance is introduced into the coating liquid and caused to pass therefrom into the cooling liquid. The coating liquid, e.g. gelatin-glycerine solution, may contain a substance, e.g. soap, sulphonated higher alcohols, &c., reducing the surface tension at its interface witn the cooling liquid, e.g. kerosene, naphtha, petroleum etner, &c., mixed with carbon tetrachloride, perchlorethylene, &c. If desired, the latter liquids may constitute an intermediate layer, with an upper layer of water, or water admixed with alcohol, acetone, &c. In Fig. 1, the content substance passes to nozzles 11 in the chamber via cooling- jacketed pipes 12, being advantageously cooled, say, to 10-20‹F. Each nozzle is formed with a slidable pin 18 adapted to close its orifice when not in use. Regulating valve controls 26 are shown, the drops on formation being visible through windows 29. The coating liquid is supplied from receptacle 66 provided with a heater 65 and thermostat 68, stand pipe 62 ensuring the necessary hydrostatic head of liquid. The temperature of the gelatin is maintained within the chamber by heating strips 32 lying parallel to the rows of nozzles 11. The cooling liquid 35 is maintained at 40-60‹F. by cooling cells 36 in the form of hollow plates through which a refrigerant passes via pipes 38, 37, 41. The capsules reaching the surface 42 of the liquid are removed by a rotating paddle 43 over a weir 45 to a perforated draining plate 46 and collecting receptacle 47. The liquid draining into vessel 48 is pumped through a cooling coil 52 back to the chamber through lines 56 having upwardly directed openings 57.
