Abstract
602,699. Asymmetrically-conducting resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and SEARLE, A. M. Nov. 9, 1945, No. 29995. [Class 37] In a method of electro-forming an electric rectifier element, an external source of potential directly connected across the element causes electro-forming during the application of the counter-electrode. In the example a D.C. source 8 may be connected to the base plate 2 of the element and to a mushroom-headed pin 4 insulated from the base plate 2 and selenium layer 3 by an insulating lining 7. The counter electrode metal or alloy is applied through a spray gun nozzle 1, first on to the pin 4 and then gradually outwards so that a forming current passes through the layer 3, the whole element being completely formed as soon as the spraying is completed. The edges of the element are kept free from the spray by placing the element in an annular mask 5 insulated by a lining 6. If desired, the source 8 may be connected to the mask 5 instead of the pin 4, in which case the nozzle is initially directed at the mask.
