Abstract

602,378. Overload release claw clutches. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1945, No. 25519. Convention date, June 26, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A positive clutch permanently disengaged on overload comprises a lever 21 mounted on a driving (or driven) member 20 and urged by a spring 25 to coact with a cam notch 14 in a driven (or driving) member 13, the lever being held in the notch by a latch 29 linked to the lever and engaging a pawl 26 on which the spring 25 is anchored, so that initial camming of the lever out of the notch on overload unlatches the pawl and releases the spring load to disengage the clutch. As shown applied in an aircraft automatic pilot system to connect the shaft 12 of a driving servomotor (not shown) to a cable 15 linked to the main manual operating cable of a control surface, the driving member 20 is splined on the shaft 12 and carries on ball bearings 32, 33 a driven drum 13 on which the cable 15 is wound. Both the pawl 26 and the latch 29 are pivoted on the member 20, and a link 31 connects the latch to the lever 21, which engages the notch 14 through a roller 24. Excessive torque between the members 20, 13 due to overriding manual operation of the control surface causes the clutch to disengage and disconnect the servomotor from the control surface. 'I'o reset the automatic control, it is necessary to turn the pawl 26 against the spring 25 through a keyed end 28 on the pawl pivot pin 27, and to rotate the drum 13 through the manual control until the lever 21 enters the notch 14 and the latch 29 engages the pawl.
