Abstract
In carrying out continuous exothermic reactions in which a fluid is contacted with a solid catalyst in a reaction zone the temperature of which must be kept within predetermined limits, a vaporisable coolant liquid, e.g. water, is injected into the reaction zone in sufficient quantity to maintain the reaction temperature within the desired range, e.g. 350-450 DEG F., but not in excess of the amount which will be completely vaporised under the conditions prevailing therein, and in such a manner that the catalyst does not come in contact with unvaporized coolant liquid. The fluid may comprise a polymer, e.g. di-isobutylene or an aromatic nitrohydrocarbon, e.g. a nitroxylene, preferably vaporised, and hydrogen. The catalyst, which may be a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. one or more metals of Groups VI and VIII of the Periodic Table or their oxides or sulphides, and preferably molybdenum sulphide, may be maintained in the reaction zone as a series of spaced beds, the coolant liquid being injected into the spaces therebetween.ALSO:In carrying out continuous exothermic reactions, e.g hydrogenation of a polymer such as diisobutylene or aromatic nitrohydrocarbons such as nitroxylene, in which a fluid is contacted with a solid catalyst in a reaction zone the temperature of which must be kept within predetermined limits, a vaporisable coolant liquid, e.g. water, is injected into the reaction zone in sufficient quantity to maintain the reaction temperature within the desired range, e.g. 350-450 DEG F., but not in excess of the amount which will be completely vaporised under the conditions prevailing therein, and in such a manner that the catalyst does not come in contact with unvaporized coolant liquid. The hydrogenation catalyst may comprise one or more metals of Groups VI and VIII of the Periodic Table or their oxides or sulphides, preferably molybdenum sulphide, and may be maintained in the reaction zone as a series of spaced beds, the coolant liquid being injected into the spaces therebetween.
