Abstract
In the manufacture of crude 4 : 41-dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane, the product is obtained in a dry, divided condition by feeding molten, crude 4 : 41-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane on to a flaking-surface, e.g. a horizontal, hollow, rotating drum, maintained at 40 DEG to 80 DEG C., and removing the solidified material. In examples: (1) a hollow, steel drum maintained at 63 DEG C. by internal circulation of hot water, has its lower portion immersed in a steel trough containing crude, molten 4 : 41-dichlorodi-phenyl-trichloroethane, of which 70 per cent consists of the pure substance and is rotated so as to complete one revolution in 34 seconds thereby allowing sufficient time for the film of material which is collected by the drum to solidify before being removed in a dry, divided condition by a scraper knife disposed at an angle of 240 degrees from the line where the drum leaves the trough; (2) as in (1), the temperature and time of rotation of the drum being changed to 65 DEG C. and 49.5 seconds respectively.
