Abstract

Zirconia for use as an opacifier is produced by spreading a layer of a zirconium-carbon-oxygen intermediate such as produced according to Specifications 535,011 and 544,823, of less than one inch in thickness on a hearth of heat-insulating porour refractory material, e.g. Armstrong's Insulating Firebrick No. A-23, provided with a smooth, hard thin layer of refractory material, igniting the intermediate at spaced points, e.g. by adding small amounts of already burning material, and allowing burning to occur without external application of heat. The smooth hard layer, of 1/4 inch, or preferably 1/8 inch or less, in thickness, is produced by the application of cement which may be that used for cementing the refractory bricks together.
