[Class 40 (vi)] [Also in Group XVIII] A time-keeping or time-measuring mechanism comprises a pendulum or other mechanical vibrator which bears a member moved in accordance with the swing of the vibrator to co-operate with a tuned oscillatory electric circuit so as to throw said circuit into or out of resonance, the resulting change in current in the circuit being utilized to count the swings of the vibrator. In the embodiment shown, Fig. 1, a pendulum 4 carries a condenser plate 5 which as the pendulum swings, moves over a fixed condenser plate 6 to throw an oscillatory electric circuit composed of electron discharge tube VI and rectifier tube V2 and associated inductances L1, L2, condensers C1, C2, C3, C4, resistance R1 into or out of resonance, thus changing the current in the circuit. The output from the tube V2 is passed through the winding of a relay L4 controlling contacts 9 which may be in the circuit of an electromagnet operating the clock hands or other counting indicator. In a modification (not shown), the tuning of the oscillatory circuit is varied by the pendulum moving a member of low electrical resistance into or out of the neighbourhood of a coil in the tuned circuit so as to vary the inductance of the coil owing to the eddy currents induced in the member. If desired', the pendulum could carry a member of magnetizable material which, as the pendulum swings, moves into or out of the field of a coil in the tuned circuit to vary the inductance of the coil The pendulum maintaining means may also be controlled by contacts 9 in known manner.
