Abstract

A colloidal solution of sulphur is obtained by decomposing ammonium polysulphide with an aldehyde (e.g. formaldehyde or acetaldehyde) in the presence of a protective colloid. A solution containing ammoniacal casein and ammoniacal ricinoleic acid is mixed with ammonium polysulphide solution, and formaldehyde added thereto. Alternatively, ammonium alginate and ammoniacal oleic acid may be used as the protective colloid. An ammonium polysulphide containing 40-60 per cent of dissolved sulphur is prepared by continuous saturation of ammonia with hydrogen sulphide and simultaneous dissolution therein of finely pulverised sulphur.
