Abstract
601,323. Treating leather ; proofing permeable materials. TANOPLASTICS RESEARCH, Ltd., POMERANIEC, J., and UHLFELDER, F. Sept. 4, 1945, No. 22700. [Classes 76 and 140] Bodies of the polyethylene type are incorporated in the structure of leather, hides, skins and like materials of animal origin, in order to improve the tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to water, abrasion, and tearing, of these materials. The polyethylene bodies may be of the type melting below about 100‹C, and applied in the melted state or they may be used with a solvent, or as an emulsion. Incorporation may be carried out during or after tanning, and before, during or after treatment with oils, fats, or waxes. A plasticiser, e.g. isobutylene may be associated with the polyethylene body. In examples (1) leather heated by infra-red heating is dipped in melted "Alkathene" (Registered Trade Mark) and washed with white oil; (2) leather is dipped in a solution of "Winnothene" (Registered Trade Mark) in white oil.
