Abstract
A carbonaceous body for electrical contact brushes comprises carbon impregnated with a material comprising both polyoxyalkylene diols or their ethers, and also aliphatic carboxylic acids containing 8-25 carbon atoms or salts of such acids. The diols or their ethers may be the reaction products of 1, 2 alkylene oxides, e.g. ethylene oxide and/or 1, 2 propylene oxide, with water, alcohols such as tetradecanol, methyl, ethyl or butyl alcohols, or glycols. Suitable acids include oleic, stearic, palmitic or naphthenic acids. The material may be incorporated in the carbon body by separate impregnations with each component, or by a single impregnation from previously mixed solutions of the ingredients, with the assistance of vacuum or pressure. After a preliminary drying, the impregnated body may be given a final baking at a temperature of 150-210 DEG C. The baked residue of the impregnating mixture may constitute 2.0-6.0 per cent of the body.
