Abstract

A carbon or graphite block for use as an electrical contact element is impregnated wholly or in part with a mixture of ingredients including an alcohol-ether and a polyester formed by reaction of a dihydric alcohol and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid. Suitable alcohol-ethers include polyethylene glycol 400, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, pentaethylene glycol, heptaethylene glycol, hexaethylene glycol and dipropylene glycol. Suitable polyesters include glycol phthalate and triethylene glycol phthalate. The mixture may also contain organic solvents and as toluene or dioxane. The block may be degassed by subjection to a relatively low pressure followed by impregnation with the mixture; or the block may be immersed in the mixture and then subjected to a low pressure. Excess of the mixture is removed by wiping or draining and, if desired, a relatively thin coating of material, e.g., as described in Specification 576,155, [Group XXXV], may be applied to the sides of the dried block.
