Abstract

An aqueous emulsion of monomeric material comprising vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride is mixed with an aqueous slurry of a precipitate consisting of a finely-divided silicate of calcium, barium, strontium, lead or silver and is then polymerized to form electrically stabilized products. Other copolymerizable materials such as vinyl acetate, propionate and butyrate, methyl acrylate, methacrylate and ethacrylate, ethyl acrylate and diethyl monochloromaleate may be included. Catalysts such as peroxides, persulphates, perborates, percarbonates and actinic radiation may be used. The polymerization is preferably effected in an inert atmosphere and at temperatures up to 60 DEG C. Suitable emulsifying agents are gelatin, sodium oleate, potassium palmitate, sodium myristate and rosin or dehydrogenated rosin soaps; alkaryl sulphonates, sodium lauryl sulphate and salts of long chain organic bases, to which bentonite clay may be added. In an example, lead acetate is added to the emulsion as a buffer and the product is plasticised with dioctyl phthalate.
