600,341. Wells. McGAFFEY, E. W. Nov. 14, 1945, No. 30409. [Class 85] Relates to a packer for use in cementing or other operations in wells. In Fig. 1, tube 11 carries a head 12 with grooves 13<SP>1</SP> in which slips 13 are slidably mounted, the head 12 being secured to concentric tubes 14, 15, with an intervening space closed at the upper end by a ring 16<SP>1</SP>. A sleeve 16 is slidable on the tube 14 and has a pin and J-slot connection 18 therewith, the sleeve having a fixed ring 181 and a sliding ring 17<SP>1</SP> connected by springs 17 adapted to engage the well casing 10 frictionally. Tube 14 and sleeve 16 have ports 19, 20, which register when the parts are in the position shown, packings 21, 22, recessed in the tube 14, preventing leakage ; the packings may be recessed in the sleeve 16, the upper packing being placed so as to cover port 19 when the ports are out of register. The lower end of the sleeve 16 carries the packer assembly comprising a rubber &c. packer 26 held between a cup 28 and a ring 29. The upper end of the sleeve 16 carries a ring 33 rotatably held by a groove and flange connection 34, 35 ; the ring 33 has pin-and-slot connections 38 to links 36 arranged in slots in the ring and pivoted to the slips 13, the ring and slips abutting on relative movement. In operation, the device is lowered with the parts in the position shown, fluid between the tubes 14, 15 passing through ports 19, 20. When the desired depth is reached, washing is effected by water run in either through or around the tubing 11, cement is run in through tubes 11, 15, the J-lock 18 is unlocked to permit setting of the slips 13, and pressure is applied to force the cement into the formation. In another form, Fig. 4, the slips 69 are carried by the upper tubing 50, and the slip head 56, and the concentric tubes 53, 75, are carried by the tube 60 which carries the packer 62 and spring assembly 58.
