Abstract

599,981. Seats; securing cushions. BIRMINGHAM GUILD, Ltd., JONES, O. P., and SIDDENS, F. R. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25035. [Classes 52(ii) and 52(iv)] A seat or back for a chair or other seating is formed as a separate member adapted to be secured to the chair detachably whereby a seat or back cover in the form of a sheet of fabric or other material can be placed on the seat member and clamped thereto either by engaging between opposite edges of the chair frame and seat &c., or by providing the seat &c. member with removable clamping strips or by forming the seat member with opposite edge portions which are normally divergent and are pressed inwardly towards each other and then forced into the chair frame. Fig. 2 shows a detachable seat member 13 formed with, at each edge, a nose 9, depending skirt 14 and channel 15. The cover 17, with or without stuffing 18 is placed in position as shown and held by means of a clamping strip 19, a depression 22 on the seat member preventing accidental withdrawal of the strip 19. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the seat member comprises an edge frame connected by laths 25. In this case the clamping strip 28 is held in place by bolts 29 passing through lugs 30, recesses being formed on the edges of the strip to enable it to pass the lugs when placing it into position. Fig. 11 shows the seat member formed of fabric impregnated with synthetic resin to make it rigid. The divergent edges 40 are reinforced by metal strips 41 and the seat &c. member is placed in position in the chair frame by pressing the edges inwardly.
