599,394. Ornamenting metallic surfaces. WHITE, E. L. June 6, 1945, No. 14262. [Class 93] Metallic surfaces are ornamented by scouring the whole or part of the surface with pumice or other fine abrasive to produce a satin or matt background, applying to parts of the background a rotating scratch brush of the kind in which the ends of the bristles are in the same plane and applying acyclic or controlled movement to the brush relative to the article, and thereafter protecting the surface by applying thereto or producing therein a corrosionresisting surface layer. The background surface may also be produced by scoring or pitting, e.g., by means of sand-blasting or shotblasting. The brush may have bristles all of the same stiffness or several rows of bristles of different degrees of stiffness. The modified background surface may be protected against corrosion by the application of coats of clear and coloured varnishes, lacquers or synthetic transparent finishes, or by an electroplating process such as anodising.
