Abstract
In an aluminothermic or like exothermic process for the extraction of metals from metal compounds the formation of sinter slag is prevented by spreading the added portions of the thermic mixture equally over the whole surface of the reacting mass, thereby maintaining the temperature the same value at any point of any given horizontal plane on the surface of or inside the reaction mass. Such a process is preferably carried out in a melting pot lined with the self binding refractory lining described in Specification 578,165, [Group V]. The application of the invention in the production of ferro-titanium is referred to. Specification 553,568 also is referred to.
