599,236. Lifting-jacks. RUSTON-BUCYRUS, Ltd. Nov. 1, 1945, Nos. 29027 and 29028. Convention dates, Sept. 9, 1944, and Jan. 1, 1945. [Class 78(iii)] [Also in Group XXI] During well boring with cable-tool drills the tool-carrying frame 11 is supported on hydraulically-operated telescopic spuds. Each spud comprises a rectangular or octagonal outer casing 38 closed at the top by a cap 40 and rigidly connected to the frame 11, and a cylinder 44 pivotally connected to the cap and containing a piston 45 and piston rod 46. The piston rod is pivotally attached to an inner casing 39 at 47. The inner' casing is attached by a universal coupling to a ground engaging shoe 48 and slides in circular guide rings 42 which are bent from strip bar, the outer diameter of the rings being slightly greater than the inner width of the casing 38. The rings are secured to the outer casing by cutting rectangular holes in the casing 38 and the joints between the ring and the casing 38 are welded. The hydraulic ram of each spud is operated independently of the other rams. Oil under pressure is supplied from a sump 29 to a three way valve 32 by a motor driven pump and from there it is led to the top and bottom of the rams as required, by pipes 35, 36. A stop valve 37 prevents damage to the valve 32 when the machine is in use.
