Abstract

328,629. Macdonald, W. R. Jan. 30, 1929. Percussive drills.-The rate of reciprocation of a deep-boring or other hammer drill is varied by altering the pressure of the driving fluid, such as air, supplied by a pipe 26 to a cushioning chamber 23 in which the tail of the hammer piston 1 works. The piston is moved forward by air admitted through passages 4, and rearward by air admitted through passages 5, exhaust in each case being through ports 6. When water is used as the driving fluid a spring piston is fitted in a lateral chamber 44 to imitate the effect of expansive working, and a closed capsule 38 containing air with or without a spring is placed in the chamber 3. The drill is mounted in a telescoping casing 13 with a spring 14 to facilitate jarring the apparatus when required. A dust deflector 15 is mounted at the front, and a dust-catching chamber 35 with shelves at the upper end. The pressure air conduit 26 surrounds the pipe 25 for the clearing water, and in the case of subaqueous working an outer pipe 27 for exhaust air is provided. These pipes are made in coaxial lengths, joined by screwed blocks 28 with registering bores.
