Abstract
1,248,895. Percussive tools. BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc. 24 Feb., 1970 [9 May, 1969], No. 8740/70. Heading B4C. [Also in Division E1] Impacting means or hammer 28 is forced against and/or away from an anvil by a positive fluid pressure pulse wave generated in shock passage 35 and/or 36 when shuttle valve 37 is moved to prevent fluid flowing out of the outlet of the appropriate passage. As described the apparatus is used in drilling a well bore. When valve 37 closes one of the two passages 35, 36 the positive pressure wave travels up the passage to the inlet, and a negative pressure wave returns down the passage causing the valve to open the outlet from this passage and to close the outlet from the other passage. The two passages communicate with opposite sides of annular piston 41 of the hammer through ports 38 and 47 so that a pulse wave is alternatively applied to the opposite sides of the piston. Passage 35 is continued upwardly in an inner tube which extends part of the way up the drill string while passage 36 is connected to the annular space around the inner tube. Valve 37 comprises a pair of valves 37a, 37b in parallel, each end of each valve having an opening communicating with one of the passages and closable by a valve head 61 or 62. The valve heads of each valve are joined by a sleeve 63 so that they move in unison. The interior of each valve is connected to passage 23 in body 14. The anvil which is struck by hammer 28 is slidably mounted by means of a sleeve on body 14 so that when the bit connected to the anvil is off bottom ports in the body 14 are opened to bypass valves 37a, 37b.
