Abstract

<PICT:0598820/IV/1> In order to prevent the formation of crimp in synthetic linear polyamide filaments which have been hot drawn in a heating zone at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. but below their melting point, the filaments are uniformly cooled as they progress in the same straight line path defined during their travel through the heating zone. During drawing the filaments are heated preferably by radiant heat but other means such as heated air, steam, hot liquids or molten alloys may also be employed. The uniform cooling is preferably effected by passing the filaments through a bath of cool water whereby they are cooled to a temperature below 50 DEG C. If desired, the cooled filaments may finally be subjected to a water- or heatsetting treatment. The treated filaments are particularly useful for the manufacture of bristles, and the synthetic linear polyamides of which they are made are of the general type described in Specification 461,236. In the examples, polyhexamethylene adipamide or polyhexamethylene sebacamide alone or modified with 10 per cent of a phenol-formaldehyde resin are hot-drawn between rolls 2 and 9, whilst they travel through an electrically-controlled radiant heating tube 3 heated to a temperature of 410 DEG or 500 DEG C. On leaving the heating tube 3 the filaments travel through a cold water trough 5 where they are uniformly cooled. The filaments are finally set by treatment with boiling water. If desired, the direction of travel of the filaments in the heating tube may be reversed one or more times.
