Abstract

598,766. Rotary pumps and motors. STEVENS, A. H. (Manly Corporation). May 12, 1944, No. 9127. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary motor or pump of the outwardly-sliding vane type, the radially - acting hydraulic forces on each vane are balanced during its passage through the high-pressure inlet area, and each vane is acted on by a spring, having two or more arms with one arm engaging the vane and another arm engaging the bottom of the vane slot. The rotor 15, Figs. 1 and 2, is disposed between stationary cheek plates 34, 35, and is mounted loosely on a splined shaft 20 so that it can move axially or rock slightly to take up a position determined by the cheekplates. The latter have ports 38, 39, Fig. 4, which communicate by means of radial grooves with inlet ports 36 and outlet ports 37 respectively to apply fluid pressure to the inner ends of the vanes 17-to balance the pressure on their outer ends. Inlet and outlet passages formed in the body 10 communicate with the corresponding ports 36, 37 in plate 34 only ; plate 35 functions only to provide hydraulic balance of the rotor and vanes in an axial direction. A cheek-plate for a reversible motor has supplementary balance ports 132, 133, Fig. 5, which are supplied with high-pressure fluid irrespective of the direction of rotation through either one of two non-return valves 142, 143. The vanes are pressed outwards by wire springs 50 comprising straight or curved arms joined by coiled portions ; several modified forms are described. As an alternative, a flat leaf type of spring, Fig. 14, may be used. The vane 17 may be relieved at the inner end as at 220 and 221, Fig. 15, to avoid bearing on a sharp tip when tilted in its slot by inequality of fluid pressure on the opposite faces of its outer ends. The invention may be applied to variable capacity motors or pumps of the type described in Specification 564,769.
