Abstract
Laevorotatory thyroxine is obtained from thyroprotein compositions such as that formed by the iodination of a protein such as casein, egg albumin or soy bean protein, without racemisation, by hydrolysing the protein in an aqueous solution of an acid and N-butyl alcohol and extracting substantially pure thyroxine from the hydrolytic products thus formed. The acid used may be a mineral acid, preferably sulphuric acid. In Examples: (1) thyroactive iodinated casein, N-butyl alcohol and sulphuric acid and refluxed together from which leuco-thyroxine is obtained in its pure crystalline form; (2) thyroactive soy bean protein, hydrochloric acid and N-butyl alcohol are heated together as in (1).
