Abstract

598,673. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd., GRAY, R., and JONES, H. C. Sept. 11, 1945, Nos. 23422 and 28926. [Class 53] An accumulator is provided with an opening in one of its side walls at a point corresponding to the normal level of the electrolyte, a filling opening being provided at a higher level or in the top of the accumulator. The side opening is fitted with a liquid-level indicator having a chamber to receive electrolyte flowing from the accumulator when the normal level is exceeded, the chamber being constructed so that any liquid therein can be seen. The indicator may be incorporated in an apparatus for topping up an accumulator with water. Fig. 1 shows a portion of an accumulator having a filling orifice a in the top and a side opening c fitted with a liquidlevel indicator comprising a passage f communicating with the opening c and with a chamber or well g. When water is introduced through the orifice a, liquid rises rapidly into the well g as soon as the level of the liquid in the accumulator rises above the opening c. The indicator is then removed and the opening c closed by a screw plug. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of indicator comprising a receptacle i disposed below the level of the opening c and having an opening j through which liquid overflowing from the accumulator into the receptacle i can be seen. Figs. 4 and 5 show an apparatus for topping up an accumulator with water delivered under pressure from a hand pump s through a delivery tube r adapted to make a tight joint with the filling opening a of the accumulator. A stand m to receive the accumulator is pivoted at n to a lever o which carries the indicator i and is engaged by a spring p at its lower end, The accumutator is placed on the stand in its inclined position as shown in Fig. 4, the indicator i being out of engagement with the opening c. The plug which normally closes the opening c is removed and' the stand raised to bring the accumulator to the vertical position shown in Fig. 5. During this movement the indicator i is brought into watertight engagement with the opening c and the pipe r makes a watertight joint with the inlet a. Water is then introduced into the accumulator till it is seen to overflow into the receptacle i. The stand'is then brought to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the accumulator removed after the plug has been fitted to close the opening c. Specification 598,674 is referred to.
