Abstract
Moulded plastic compositions are produced by taking a moulding powder which comprises a water-insoluble metal alginate, an ammonium-yielding ingredient, water sufficient to make the mixture mouldable and a filler if desired, moulding under heat and pressure, preferably at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. and a pressure of one ton per sq. in. and upwards, and, after moulding, eliminating ammonium alginate from the product. The alginate is preferably zinc alginate, but ferric, beryllium, aluminium, copper, nickel or cobalt alginates may be used. The ammonium-yielding ingredient is preferably a salt of ammonia with a weak organic acid, such as ammonium acetate, formate, tartrate or citrate, or 0.880 solution of ammonia may be employed if borates are employed as ammonium alginate eliminating ingredient, these ingredients being substances introduced into the powder to react with ammonium alginate after moulding, and reconvert it to an insoluble form, and may be the borate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, trioxane, or an alkali chromate such as potassium chromate. The first Provisional Specification describes also the use of biborates. The fillers may be woodmeal, metallic powders, oxides, pigments or dyestuffs.
