Abstract

Paper of high wet-strength is made from pulp to which is added a melamine-formaldehyde or a melamine-monoureide-formaldehyde resin, e.g. having a ratio of formaldehyde to melamine of 1 to 6 : 1. The resin is prepared, e.g. by reacting 20 mols of hydrogen chloride with 20 of urea in distilled water and 20 of melamine. The melamine-monoureide is separated by crystallization and dried, 11.83 mols thereof dissolved with rapid stirring in 75 mols of formaldehyde in water and the solution rapidly cooled. The pulp is sized, e.g. with resin or stearic acid saponified with caustic soda before adding the melamine resin. Starch, glues, and dyes &c., may also be added. The precipitant, e.g. aluminium chloride is such that polyvalent inorganic acid ions are not present in the product.
