[Classes 20(iv) and 87(i)] [Also in Group XXIII] Wood floors are composed of boards formed by one or more rows of united wood blocks 1 having the grain running vertically, the boards being joined by fillets 2 glued in grooves in their edges, and the blocks in a row being united by these fillets or by a lamina, for example a piece of wood veneer 16, Fig. 6, extending along an edge, or by both. Each board may have a fillet at one edge and a corresponding open groove at the other, or boards with two fillets may alternate with others having two grooves. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the rows of blocks are united by fillets and by nailing them to a base board 6. Layers 8 of soft wood or plastic material between the rows allow for expansion, which layers may fill only the space above the fillets, as shown. In another form the fillets uniting the rows of blocks are omitted, the blocks being connected by gluing their abutting faces, and, to eliminate the effect of swelling in the longitudinal direction of the board, the transverse abutting faces are finely grooved. The boards are made by gluing together a number of laths of square or rectangular section, with or without the intermediate veneers 8, cutting the block so formed in a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction of the laths, grooving the edges of the boards so formed, and gluing the fillets in the grooves.
