Abstract

598,375. Wave-guides. GARFITT, R. G. May 7, 1945, No. 11662. [Class 40 (v)] A feeder for conveying electromagnetic energy at ultra-high frequencies comprises two coaxial conductors which are connected together along one or more lengths by a conductive septum, each connected portion acting as a septate waveguide, and the remaining portions acting as sections of a normal co-axial transmission. line. In Fig. 1 a feeder 3 interconnecting waveguides 1, 2, comprises an inner conductor 5 supported from the outer conductor by a conducting septum 7 having an axial length of about one wavelength, and having its ends at least a quarter wavelength from the junctions with waveguides 2, 3. The section including the septum 7 acts as a rectangular guide which has been bent round until its two narrow sides coincide in the septum 7. The ends 6 of the inner conductor extend into guides 2, 3 as energy exchanging probes, the guide walls being bulged as at 9 to reduce sparking. The outer conductor is divided transversely at 8 to allow of relative rotation between guides 1, 2, the joint at 8 comprising overlapping quarter-wave flanges to reduce leakage. Alternatively the joint may be formed between one end of feeder 3 and the adjoining waveguide, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 5, the feeder is bent to allow the guides 1 and 2 to move in non-parallel planes. The bend is confined to the middle portion 3<11>, which contains the waveguide septum 7. The end sections 31, 3<111> are straight and are fixed to the waveguides 1, 2.
