Abstract
<PICT:0598354/III/1> Thermo-plastic resins are recovered from solutions by feeding the solution into the top of a stripping column maintained internally at a temperature greater than the softening point of the solvent-free resin and at a pressure equal to or greater than atmospheric pressure, introducing live steam into the column near the base, and withdrawing the resin, in the molten state and substantially solvent-free, from the base of the column through a seal. The resin may then be solidified as a film on a cooled rotating cylinder and finally scraped off in the form of flakes. The process is particularly applicable to solutions of indene and of coumarone resins in solvent naphtha. Resin solution is passed through pre-heater 6 and fed into the pre-stripping sections 25 of bubble-cap column 7 where it is further heated by effluent vapours from the lower sections. These lower sections, to which the p solution now passes, are heated by steam-coils 13. Live steam enters the column through pipe 26 and strips the solvent from the resin. The latter collects on plate 27, overflows through pipe 28 which dips below a heated layer of resin in the base of the column, and is eventually withdrawn through the steam-jacketed conduit controlled by valve 30.
