Abstract

597,193. Cooling systems for internal-combustion engines. HUMBER, Ltd., and MILLER, A. C. Aug. 11, 1945, No. 20677. [Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] An engine cooling fan is driven through an electromagnetic clutch which is energized when a predetermined engine temperature is reached and disconnected when the temperature drops. The fan 11 is formed with, or fixed to, a ring 12, which with a pulley 15 is freely mounted in a bearing sleeve 17, held on the shaft 14 by circlips 18. The fan and pulley are made of magnetic material, and one has a coil 19, which is energized so that the two are frictionally engaged when a thermally actuated switch is closed. The switch may be placed in the engine cylinder head, or at the base of the radiator. The fan and pulley may be moved back by a spring.
