Abstract
<PICT:0597053/III/1> Gas oils synthetised from carbon monoxide and hydrogen e.g., by the Fisher-Tropsch process are converted into gasolines of improved octane rating by subjecting the gas oil to destructive hydrogenation under the following conditions (1) temperature-680-800 DEG F. (2) pressure-10-250 atmos. (3) feed rates-2-8 vols. of liquid per volume catalyst per hour (4) hydrogen-1000-8000 cu. ft. hydrogen per barrel oil feed (5) catalysts-hydrofluoric acid treated clays of the montmorillonite type impregnated with tungsten sulphide; metals of the iron group; oxides of tungsten, molybdenum and chromium; synthetic alumina, silica, magnesia gels. A crude synthetic oil of boiling range 300-700 DEG F and having an aniline point of 200 DEG F is fed from drum 1 through heater 6 into reactor 14 together with hydrogen from heater 24; reaction products are removed through line 30 to hydrogen separator 32 the hydrogen being recycled through scrubber S. The reaction products pass to tower 42 where they are separated into gases withdrawn through 60, a gasoline fraction withdrawn through cooler 50 to receiver 52 and bottoms recycled through line 62. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 552,731.
