Abstract

A polymer produced by polymerization in solution in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst is treated, at a temperature sufficient to split off the halogen as hydrogen halide and under pressure, with a solution or suspension in a liquid vehicle of a neutralizing agent. Specified Friedel-Crafts catalysts are aluminium chloride or bromide, ferric chloride, boron trifluoride and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. Specified polymers are those of indene, coumarone, styrene, styrene-coumarone and propylene, while the neutralizing agent may be alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate. The liquid vehicle may be water and/or an organic liquid or mixture of organic liquids. Intimate contact between the polymer solution and the neutralizing agent is obtained by passing the two together through a long narrow-bore tube, preferably in the form of a coil. The temperature is maintained between 180 DEG and 220 DEG C. when coumarone and/or indene resins are so treated. After treatment, the polymer solution may be washed with water to remove any neutralizing agent and halide salts therefrom.
