Abstract
A catalyst for the low temperature polymerization of olefins comprises a solution in a low-freezing solvent of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in which part of the halogen has been replaced by oxygen or hydroxyl. Aluminium chloride is the preferred catalyst. The solvent is a hydrocarbon, an alkyl halide, or carbon bisulphide. According to an example, anhydrous aluminium chloride is suspended in methyl chloride, water is sprayed in and the mixture allowed to stand at the boiling point of methyl chloride until hydrolysis occurs. Hydrogen chloride is removed by boiling and the liquid decanted from undissolved solid. The solution is stirred into a mixture of isobutylene and isoprene cooled with liquid ethylene.
