Abstract

<PICT:0596886/III/1> In apparatus for detecting the presence of explosive gases in air or other inert gases, of the kind in which the gas passes through a detecting chamber and an indication is given in accordance with the combustibility of the mixture, the sampling line is provided with an adjustable dilution valve H by means of which inert gas may be mixed with the gas under test, and a scale J or its equivalent indicates the degree of dilution at each setting of the valve. An indication is thereby obtained of whether the proportion of explosive gas is above that giving maximum combustibility, and from the scale reading the amount of excess explosive gas may be determined. The detecting apparatus may be of the type described in Specification 567,101 in which the gas passes over an electrically heated filament forming part of a Wheatstone bridge, and the dilution valve may be associated with a liquid trap D, e.g., of the kind described in Specification 566,072, and serve as a drain therefor. The gas under test passes through passages G3 and G2, via filter G4, and inert gas is admitted through passages F2 from radial ports H2. A micrometer scale may be provided on the valve head.
