Abstract
596,860. Furnace charging machines. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and KAY, I. Oct. 13. 1944, No. 19840. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXX] In load-handling apparatus such as furnace charging machines or forging manipulators of the kind comprising a work-carrying member, e.g., a peel 4, secured to a carrier 5 which is mounted on a wheeledcarriage 1 by means of a parallel linkage consisting on each side of a pair of bell-crank levers 6, 7 connected bv a rod 8, the carrier 5 is raised and lowered by pistons connected to the vertical arms 6 of one pair of the bell-cranks and operating in fluid-pressure cylinders 14 fixed on the carrier 5. The horizontal arms 7 of the bell-cranks are pivoted respectively to fixed brackets 9 and to links 10 connected to one arm 11 of a further pair of bell-cranks whose other arms 13 are attached to pistons operating in fluid-pressure cylinders 12 mounted on the carriage 1 and serving to tilt the peel upwardly as shown in Fig. 5. An air recuperator 15 or an oil cylinder having a spring-loaded piston is connected in the fluid supply line to the cylinders 14 to take up vertical shocks. Modifications are described in which springs, to take up axial shocks, are arranged in connection with links to which the arms 7 of the bell-cranks are pivoted.
