Abstract

<PICT:0596377/III/1> Bulk polymerization of such as styrene, and vinyl acetate, [Group IV], is effected in the apparatus of Fig. 1. Part "A" is a still having jacket 11. Down the centre of the still runs a shaft driven by motor 20 and carrying agitators 14, 15 and 16. Monomer is fed from drum 36 into the still and there polymerised during agitation. The material is nearly solid and is passed by screw 17 to heated zone 42, through reaction zone 44 and further heated by 47. The solid polymer is now passed through gate 64 and milled in portion C whilst being heated by jacket 74. Distillate from the still 10 is carried off by 21 and condensed in 23. Specification 432,646 [Group XIX], 513,256, [Group IV], and 593,799, [Group V], are referred to.ALSO:Bulk polymerization of liquid vinyl monomers is effected by agitating the monomers at a temperature at which they are mobile till partly polymerized and the mass is nearly immobile, raising the temperature to restore mobility and complete polymerization, then finally raising the temperature to eliminate unwanted volatiles. Monomers specified are styrene, vinyl acetate and butyrate, chlorostyrene, methyl, ethyl and propyl styrenes, vinyl naphthalenes and mixtures of these with butadiene. The process may be carried out in an inert atmosphere or vacuum and the agitation may be continued till the polymerization is complete. The product may be extruded and stretched. An apparatus is described (see Group III) for carrying out the process. Specifications 432,646, [Group XIX], 513,256 and 593,799, [Group V], are referred to.
