Abstract

Polymers are obtained from a monomeric or pivotally polymerized material consisting solely of methyl methacrylate, or of a mixture of methyl methacrylate and a copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated compound, by continuously feeding the polymerizable substance, in admixture with from 0.001-5% of its weight of a free-radical organic polymerization catalyst which has a half-life of not less than one minute nor greater than sixty minutes at a temperature selected from the range of from 130-250 DEG C., into a reaction apparatus having one or more feed inlets connected by a duct to a delivery outlet, said material being caused to flow along at least part of said duct through at least one zone maintained at a temperature or temperatures selected from the range 130-250 DEG C. at which said catalyst has said half-life, and thereafter continuously discharging polymerized material from the delivery outlet of said apparatus, the process being characterized in that there is additionally introduced into the reaction apparatus a polymer that is solid and rubber-like at room temperature, which is preformed or which is formed in situ in said apparatus and which is derived from ethylenically unsaturated material, the weight of said rubber-like polymer being not greater than the weight of said polymethyl methacrylate. The rubber-like polymer preferably in the form of a latex may be fed continuously with the methyl methacrylate into the reaction apparatus, or the monomeric ingredients for the rubber-like polymer may be introduced after the methylmethacrylate has polymerized, or before the introduction of the methylmethacrylate monomer. Rubber - like polymers exemplified are copolymers of ethyl acrylate and glycol dimethacrylate, methyl methacrylate and butadiene.
