Abstract

596,317. Preserving wood. OSMOSE WOOD PRESERVING CO. OF AMERICA, Inc. March 14, 1945, No. 6354. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1944. [Class 140] Case-hardened or semi-dried wood of non- uniform moisture content is subjected to heat and moisture to soften it and render the moisture content uniform, maintained in such condition and immersed in a substantial volume of a relatively cold saturated aqueous solution of a wood preservative having a solubility of from 1 to 15 g. per 100 c.c. water at 20‹ C., the solution being kept saturated by excess of undissolved preservative. Hot water or wet steam under pressure is usually employed for the first step. Preservatives specified are boric acid, cadmium cyanide, cupric borate, cupric acetate, cupric fluoride or tartrate, lead cyanide, mercuric chloride, mercuric cyanide, potassium meta-arsenite, potassium permanganate, sodium fluoride, sodium oxalate or acid oxalate, zinc fluoride, trimethyl arsine, phenyl mercuric acetate, methyl boric acid, nitrophenyl boric acid, picric acid, phenol, p-chlorophenol, m-cresol, (2, 4) cresotic acid and omethyl phenol. Aqueous tacky pastes may thereafter be coated on the treated wood. The drying may be retarded by enclosing the wet wood in a waterproof air-tight covering.
